But I'm nervous, because I tend to kill things.
I'm especially nervous because I don't want one of those "things" to be my cat, so we printed out a long list of plants toxic to cats, but it's extremely long and I find most of them unidentifiable because they are in Latin. Damn you, binomial nomenclature!
The other night, my friend Brooke told me tulips are bad. Nooooo! I love tulips and fantasized about buying bunches and placing them in old wine bottles all around the house. Oh well, I'll have to do some more flower research.
Incidentally, the night our friends Brooke and Rich came over, I made a kick-ass rhubarb crisp, if I may say so myself. While this pretty red celery-looking fruit/veggie is in season, I'm going to make it in a whole bunch of different ways. I love rhubarb.
I was too tipsy to take out my camera that night, but honestly, it looked exactly like this:
I stole from a bunch of different recipes and put it together based on what I had on hand. I used strawberries for that tart-sweet combination, but if you love that tart flavor, you can skip the berries.
- 2 lbs rhubarb, cut into 1 inch pieces
- a pint of strawberries (or more, or less, or none...it doesn't really matter)
- 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp vanilla extract or orange extract or Grand Marnier Liquor (all these are optional; I used vanilla)
- 1 stick salted butter (if using unsalted, add a 1/2 tsp salt to the recipe)
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
Combine remaining flour, brown sugar, butter (cut in pieces) and salt (if using) and mix together with your hands until it forms a crumbly mixture.
Sprinkle over rhubarb-strawberry mixture and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until it starts bubbling and turns golden brown. I served it with vanilla bean ice cream. Yum.
Have a good weekend! I have a dress fitting (yikes) and a baby shower for one of my best friends. (yay!)

i'm nervous to plant this year, not because i tend to kill things but because my dog tends to kill them. i'm going to try a few hanging plants and cross my fingers that he is disinclined to try to reach and destroy them. good luck with the dress fitting.
ReplyDeleteok, no joke, i just posted about RHUBARB (well, it gets a little nod at the end of my post) and then clicked over to swoon to see what you're up to.
ReplyDeletewe gals, we think alike. there are some insane rhubarb desserts on epicurious under their spring dessert feature. seriously, rhubarb is my absolute favorite edible stalk around.
good luck with your dress fitting- SO EXCITING!!!
The crisp was AMAZING. I'm still dreaming about it. Actually, the entire dinner was delish ... yum. :)
ReplyDeleteGood luck on the fitting!!
i'm hungry now.
ReplyDeletei also hear daffodils are poisonous too. i have a bit of a "black thumb" but i think it's getting greener...i've managed to keep some plants alive for over a year!!
You may be my favorite person of the day, because I was just saying on my blog how I can't wait to get hold of some rhubarb. And a rhubarb crisp?! Well, darling, I shall sleep comfortably this evening thanks to you :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, any fruit crisp is such a winner for me! This sounds amazing... I think rhubarbs are such a gorgeous color.

Yummmmm, that sounds delicious! I wish I had some right now : )
ReplyDeleteI love tulips too! Your blog is absolutely beautiful... I just added you to my google reader, and am already addicted!! :)
ReplyDeleteYummy! Sounds good!
ReplyDeleteha ha i just was over my friend's apartment admiring her exotic plants and kept thinking 'can't get that cats will eat it'. all I have growing in the house right now is herbs (which they could care less about) but I do grow them cat grass too!
ReplyDeleteI am a plant killer from way back. I even managed to kill the most beautiful and expensive bonsai tree. Loved the poor thing to death.
ReplyDeleteI'm a plant killer too! It's so sad...I let J take care of them now but she's not so great either. She brings them to the brink of death and then tries to nurse them back to life. I think she's a bit sadistic. lol
ReplyDeleteThat rhubarb dish sounds delish!
Hope u had a good weekend and that you had fun at your dress fitting :)
I know I've mentioned this on my blog before, but one of our kittens ate some tulips before--she pooped blood for a week, I guess because it irritated her tummy, but once it passed, she was fine. (We did take her to the vet and get some overpriced pills, but in the end it seemed to go away on its own.) All that to say that some plants may be bad for cats, but not necessarily dangerous beyond making them feel shitty for a few days.
