confessions of a v-day hater

Confession: I hate Valentine's Day. Single or attached, I always find it so obnoxious and contrived and the food at restaurants always sucks that night and I don't want red roses if everybody else is getting red roses and they're on sale for 25 bucks at the corner market. And, and, and, I hate the pressure of "having to do something romantic." puke.
Whatever. I know so many women feel the same way, so here's the real confession: it annoys me that he hates it too. Because in my sick world, he should not be allowed to get out of buying me flowers and nasty chocolate hearts and potentially making me something.
The first or second year we were dating, he made me a Valentine's Day card. It was awesome. It took great effort, and I have not let him forget that card. Especially since making me a card has not become a tradition. I might be crazy.
What do you guys think about V-Day? I'm thinking we should make a good dinner and watch a horror flick, kitty sprawled out on our laps.
Here's his card, by the way...I can't share the words inside - privacy, people - but you get the gist.

  1. I'm kind of on the same page as you are. Yeah, a lot of it can be contrived but I still want him to do stuff for me (and not just $25 red roses, you know?) I do hate going to restaurants on Valentine's because its always a mad rush.

I liked that the last two years we went away for the weekend. It was a nice way to spend the time and reconnect. Unfortunately, my husband's work schedule won't let us do that this year so out to the restaurants we go!

    Happy Weekend!

  2. um that card is amazingly clever!

i don't know why everyone gets so up in arms about valentine's day. for me it's a good excuse to have a special dinner, whether it's steak and chocolate cake in, or at one of our favorite restaurants out. one year he got me flowers because he couldn't believe i'd never gotten a real flower delivery before. he hasn't been very good with giving me flowers since then though.

in my single days, i do remember one year having a party in my dorm room with lots of red jello shots. that was fun too.

  6. That card is awesome! Your points about Valentine's Day are quite valid. I used to really hate it, but as long as no one around me takes it too seriously (roses? red lingerie? Vday restaurant specials? gag.)I think it's just an awesome excuse to wear slutty red shoes, buy myself some ranunculus and hang out with the people I love. Not so different from any other weekend, right?

  8. Like this post!! You know I really enjoy Valentine's Day... I just look at it as any other day that I get to go on an adventure with my hubby... we don't buy each other anything but maybe a coffee and a croissant... it's like any other day. However, we are going on a date night tonight and guess what we are seeing... WOLFMAN hahaha kind of a horror movie, then frozen yogurt after, hopefully I will be hungry after watching a wolfman devour his lovely little wife... any who... sending you much love! xo Oh and homemade Valentines are the best :)

I love valentines day - any excuse for red hearts is gold in my book. I'm a sucker for all holidays.

  11. Valentines day isnt really on my radar.
But predictable romantic gestures are probably better than no romantic gestures.
I guess some people put more into it, so get more out of it.
    Homemade gifts are the best.
    That card is great.
